Visual Puzzles asks which three of six pieces form a completed shape
In the WAIS Visual Puzzles subtest, the person sees a completed target shape and six possible pieces. They must choose the three pieces that would combine to form the target within the time limit.
The pieces cannot be moved or tried in different positions. The person must work out mentally how the selected pieces would connect. In the Japanese WAIS-IV, Visual Puzzles is a core subtest of the Perceptual Reasoning Index, or PRI, alongside Block Design and Matrix Reasoning.
In the 2024 US WAIS-5, Visual Puzzles is a primary Visual Spatial Index, or VSI, subtest, but it is not one of the seven subtests used to calculate FSIQ.
The task combines part-whole analysis, mental rotation, and shape integration
Choosing the correct three pieces requires several processes:
- identifying how the completed shape could be divided into parts;
- comparing the outlines, edges, and corners of each option with the target;
- rotating possible pieces mentally to align their orientations;
- imagining the outer contour produced when three pieces are joined; and
- checking that the combined shape matches the target without gaps or protruding sections.
Lines along the joins disappear in the completed shape. The person therefore has to set aside the internal boundaries and imagine the pieces again as one outer form.
What higher and lower Visual Puzzles scores can show
In the Japanese WAIS-IV, a higher scaled score indicates that, compared with people of the same age, the person was strong at decomposing a completed shape, changing the orientation of parts mentally, and integrating several parts accurately. Even without physically trying the pieces, they could more readily anticipate the final contour and rule out unsuitable options.
A lower score means that greater demand arose in breaking the whole into likely parts, rotating options mentally, keeping three shapes available at once, or comparing the joined contour with the target. Time also affects performance: reaching a correct combination more slowly can reduce the score when the response must be made within the limit.
If Visual Puzzles is clearly higher than Block Design, mentally combining shapes may be a relative strength compared with quickly manipulating and reconstructing a design with physical objects. If it is higher than Matrix Reasoning, decomposing and integrating shapes may be a relative strength compared with discovering rules in an arrangement of figures.
