WAIS Picture Completion

Picture Completion asks a person to identify an important missing part in a meaningful picture. It draws on visual search, knowledge of how objects and situations work, and judgment of which detail matters.

Picture Completion asks the person to find an important missing part

The WAIS Picture Completion subtest presents a picture of a familiar object or everyday situation and asks the person to identify an important part that is missing within the time limit. They must understand what the picture represents and find something that should be present but is not shown.

Picture Completion was a core subtest in WAIS-III. In the Japanese WAIS-IV, it is a supplemental subtest of the Perceptual Reasoning Index, or PRI. PRI is normally calculated from Block Design, Matrix Reasoning, and Visual Puzzles in that edition, so a report may show a Picture Completion scaled score even when it was not used to calculate PRI or FSIQ.

Picture Completion was removed from the 2024 US WAIS-5. That is a change to the US edition, not a statement that the subtest has disappeared from every WAIS edition. The task requires judging which missing detail is important

Picture Completion requires close attention to detail, but the task does not end when the person notices something unusual. They must judge whether the omission is an important part of the object's structure or the situation's meaning.

It therefore differs from a simple spot-the-difference activity or a visual-search task that asks the person to find a matching symbol. The person must connect the visual detail with what the picture means and how the object or situation normally works.

Visual search, acquired knowledge, and judgment all contribute

Finding the important omission involves several processes:

  • recognizing the object or situation represented by the whole picture;
  • searching its parts for something that appears incomplete or unusual;
  • comparing the picture with acquired knowledge about the object's structure or purpose;
  • judging which possible omission is important; and
  • identifying the location or missing content within the time limit.

What higher and lower Picture Completion scores can show

In the Japanese WAIS-IV, a higher scaled score indicates that, compared with people of the same age, the person could recognize meaningful pictures quickly, search their details, and identify an important omission. They could readily connect a visual inconsistency with knowledge about how the object or situation normally works.

A lower score can reflect greater difficulty recognizing the pictured object or situation, searching the details, comparing the image with acquired knowledge, selecting the important omission, or answering within the time limit. If Picture Completion is clearly higher than Block Design or Visual Puzzles, finding important information in familiar, meaningful scenes may be a relative strength compared with decomposing and constructing unfamiliar shapes. If it is higher than Matrix Reasoning or Figure Weights, interpreting visual information using acquired knowledge may be easier than deriving a new rule from visual or quantitative relationships.
