WAIS Matrix Reasoning

Matrix Reasoning asks a person to identify relationships and rules in a matrix or sequence of figures and choose the missing part. The score reflects rule discovery, integration of several relationships, and testing possible answers.

Matrix Reasoning asks which figure completes a matrix or sequence

In the WAIS Matrix Reasoning subtest, the person examines figures arranged according to a relationship and chooses the option that belongs in the missing position. The answer is not simply the figure that looks most similar. It must satisfy the relationship among the figures already shown.

Items can include a 3×3 matrix as well as a sequence of figures. In the Japanese WAIS-IV, Matrix Reasoning is a core subtest of the Perceptual Reasoning Index, or PRI, alongside Block Design and Visual Puzzles.

In the 2024 US WAIS-5, Matrix Reasoning is a primary Fluid Reasoning Index, or FRI, subtest and is also used to calculate FSIQ.

Solving the task requires combining rules about shape, orientation, position, and number

The person must identify what stays the same and what changes across the figures. Relevant features can include:

  • shape or line;
  • orientation;
  • position;
  • size;
  • number; and
  • shading or fill.

A feature may remain constant, change in a sequence, exchange positions across a row or column, or be combined with or removed from another figure.

Difficulty does not come only from more visually complex figures. It also increases when the relevant features must be separated from irrelevant details, vertical and horizontal relationships must be considered together, or several rules must be integrated into one answer.

Matrix Reasoning brings together rule discovery, relational integration, and hypothesis testing

The solution process can be understood in three overlapping parts:

  • Rule discovery — identifying which elements change and how they change
  • Relational integration — combining relationships found across several rows, columns, or visual attributes
  • Hypothesis testing — checking whether a possible rule also works in the other parts of the matrix or sequence

Matrix Reasoning is a representative task for fluid reasoning, or Gf, because the rule must be derived from unfamiliar information rather than retrieved from learned facts. It is also strongly related to general intelligence, or g. Rule discovery, integration, and testing are not separate official scores; they are processes that contribute together to the Matrix Reasoning score.

What higher and lower Matrix Reasoning scores can show

In the Japanese WAIS-IV, a higher score indicates that, compared with people of the same age, the person was strong at selecting relevant features in unfamiliar figures, identifying abstract rules, and integrating several relationships into one answer.

A lower score means that selecting the relevant features and combining several relationships into a consistent rule was more demanding. The interpretation can consider attention to the right feature, recognition of change, understanding of correspondences, retention and integration of several rules, and flexibility in changing an initial hypothesis.

If Matrix Reasoning is clearly higher than Visual Puzzles, discovering rules among figures may be a relative strength compared with mentally decomposing and assembling shapes. If it is clearly higher than Figure Weights, inductive visual rule discovery may have been easier than deriving quantitative equivalence from stated conditions. How Matrix Reasoning differs from Visual Puzzles and Figure Weights

Matrix-style problems overlap with Mensa-style reasoning, but the routes are not equivalent

Mensa-style practice often uses the same broad format as matrix-reasoning problems: discovering a rule in a 3×3 arrangement or another sequence of figures. The overlap is in the task format and the reasoning process.

That resemblance does not make a practice problem an official Mensa test, produce a WAIS Matrix Reasoning score, or provide admission evidence. BrainTypeIQ uses its own items, online administration, timing, scoring, and comparison norms. Its Matrix Reasoning task contributes to BrainTypeIQ’s Gf domain score and wider five-domain cognitive profile without being treated as the same subtest or score as WAIS Matrix Reasoning.
