Set Relations is a new WAIS-5 subtest that requires several pieces of information to be considered together so that a logically consistent relationship or conclusion can be identified. Its central demand is deductive reasoning: using the conditions that are available and determining what follows from them.

This differs from learning a familiar rule and applying it from memory. The person must organize unfamiliar information, preserve the relevant relationships, and reach an answer that satisfies the conditions as a whole.

Set Relations is a secondary subtest in the fluid-reasoning domain of the 2024 US WAIS-5 and the 2025 Australian and New Zealand Standardised Edition.

The WAIS-5 UK also includes Set Relations and describes its function in terms of deductive reasoning, logical thinking, fluid intelligence, and simultaneous processing. Working memory and acquired knowledge can also contribute to handling the information, but the defining role is fluid reasoning.

Deduction, logical consistency, and simultaneous processing work together

Set Relations draws on several connected processes:

Set Relations differs from Matrix Reasoning and Figure Weights

All three subtests provide evidence about fluid reasoning, or Gf, but each emphasizes a different route to an answer.

Matrix Reasoning asks the person to infer an implicit rule from examples. Figure Weights asks them to derive a quantitative relationship. Set Relations instead places the greatest emphasis on following the available relationships to a logically supported conclusion.

What higher and lower Set Relations performance can show

Under standardized WAIS-5 conditions, higher Set Relations performance shows that the person handled the combined demands of deduction, logical consistency, and simultaneous processing effectively. Lower performance means that coordinating several relationships and identifying the conclusion supported by all of them was more demanding in this task.
