Fluid reasoning finds relationships in new problems
Fluid reasoning (Gf) is the ability to find relationships or rules in a problem you are seeing for the first time, then reason through it in the moment. Instead of using knowledge exactly as it was memorized, it infers structure from the information in front of you.
It works in situations such as these.
- Finding a rule in a puzzle with unfamiliar conditions
- Thinking through a relationship made of several conditions
- Changing the way you think when the assumptions change
- Finding similarities and differences across pieces of information
Gf is not the amount of knowledge. It is the ability to build relationships from unfamiliar conditions. It is used when comparing new information, forming hypotheses, and constructing a line of reasoning.
How Gf differs from Gc
Gf and Gc are both important domains of intelligence, but they work differently.
| Domain | Core ability | Situations where it is often used |
|---|---|---|
| Gf | Finding relationships or rules in a new problem | Figure reasoning, rule discovery, adapting to new conditions |
| Gc | Using accumulated knowledge for understanding and judgment | Vocabulary, reading, explanation, use of background knowledge |
If Gf is the ability to think in a situation you do not yet know, Gc is the ability to understand by using what you already know. In actual learning and work, the ability to find structure in an unfamiliar problem and the ability to grasp meaning through accumulated knowledge often work together.
Gc is covered in what crystallized intelligence (Gc) is.
In daily life, it often appears when conditions are new
When Gf is high, unfamiliar conditions and open-ended tasks tend to be easier to handle.
- Understanding the mechanism rather than memorizing example answers
- Forming hypotheses even in ambiguous situations
- Reorganizing the approach when conditions change
- Finding rules from relationships among figures or quantities
When Gf is relatively lower, a problem may become harder when it changes slightly from the example, or when the rules are not clearly stated. On the other hand, as knowledge and experience increase, more previously unfamiliar problems can be handled as familiar patterns.
Gf is the ability to think through new problems in the moment. In real life, however, it is often more stable to build experience and knowledge so that they can be used as Gc.
The relationship between aging and intelligence is covered in intelligence and aging.
Gf does not determine the whole ability profile
Even when Gf is high, it is still necessary to read situations that require holding information while processing it, outputting quickly under time pressure, or explaining ideas in words. Conversely, some people have relatively lower Gf but stronger Gc, Gv, Gwm, or Gs.
For example, if the way to think is clear but it is hard to keep intermediate conditions in mind, Gwm is involved. If the answer is understood but difficult to produce within a time limit, Gs is involved. If figure tasks feel difficult, Gv may also be involved, not only Gf.
Perceptual reasoning is covered in what low perceptual reasoning means.
Gf in BrainTypeIQ
BrainTypeIQ is an online IQ test with 9 tasks that shows overall IQ and differences across the cognitive profile. Gf is read through the Matrix Reasoning and Figure Weights tasks.
- Matrix Reasoning task: looks at the ability to find rules in figures
- Figure Weights task: looks at the ability to reason from relationships among weights or quantities
It is not a substitute for a diagnostic assessment, but it can be an entry point for reading the balance of reasoning, verbal comprehension, working memory, and processing speed.
