What Is FSIQ?

FSIQ, or Full Scale IQ, is an overall IQ score that combines several cognitive domains. Within the broader word IQ, it refers to the overall score shown in results from tests such as the WAIS.

FSIQ is an overall IQ score

FSIQ stands for Full Scale IQ. In intelligence tests such as the WAIS, it is the overall score that combines results from multiple subtests and cognitive domains.

FSIQ is the first number people usually look at in a test result. It gives a broad sense of whether the overall level is around average, higher, or lower.

However, FSIQ does not explain all abilities with one number. Differences in verbal comprehension, reasoning, working memory, processing speed, and other areas can become harder to see once they are combined into an overall score.

The difference between FSIQ and IQ

IQ is a broad term for scores from intelligence tests, usually placed on a scale with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15. Within that broad term, FSIQ refers to the overall IQ for the whole test.

The relationship is easiest to understand this way.

In everyday speech, "high IQ" or "low IQ" may refer to FSIQ, or it may refer more loosely to a specific test score. When reading WAIS results, it is more accurate to separate FSIQ from the index scores.

FSIQ can hide profile differences

FSIQ alone is not enough because differences across domains are averaged into one score.

For example, if someone has strong verbal reasoning and lower processing speed, FSIQ combines both. Looking only at the overall score may make the result seem average, even though the actual pattern may be "understands quickly, but experiences load in timed output."

FSIQ can make the following points harder to see.

  • Which domains are stronger
  • Which domains are more likely to create load
  • Why daily work or tasks may feel difficult
  • Whether there is a processing-efficiency gap such as GAI/CPI

The larger the profile differences are, the more FSIQ alone may feel out of step with the person's actual experience.

Read FSIQ as a band

IQ scores include measurement error. It is more natural to read one test score as an estimate with a range, rather than as a fixed value down to one point.

FSIQ is a number for reading the overall band, not for ranking people by tiny differences. From there, it becomes easier to return to domain differences, GAI/CPI, and actual areas of difficulty.

FSIQ is the first number to look at. The meaning becomes clearer when it is followed by the differences across cognitive domains.
