Block Design asks the person to reproduce a model with blocks
In the WAIS Block Design subtest, the person uses blocks with red, white, and red-and-white faces to reproduce a model. Rather than looking at a design and choosing an answer, they must identify the necessary faces and orientations, place the blocks, and complete the same pattern.
In the Japanese WAIS-IV, Block Design is a core subtest of the Perceptual Reasoning Index, or PRI, alongside Matrix Reasoning and Visual Puzzles. The central demand is to break the complete design down into parts, map each part onto a block face, preserve the spatial relationships, and reconstruct the whole.
In the 2024 US WAIS-5, Block Design is a primary Visual Spatial Index, or VSI, subtest and is also used to calculate FSIQ.
Accuracy is essential, and time contributes to some scores
In Block Design, the pattern must first be completed correctly. Placing blocks quickly does not earn credit if the resulting design is wrong.
For some items in the Japanese WAIS-IV, completion time affects the score after the design has been completed correctly. Two correct responses can therefore receive different credit when one was produced more quickly. Although time is involved, Block Design belongs to PRI in the Japanese WAIS-IV, not the Processing Speed Index. The main demand is to analyze the model and reconstruct it accurately, rather than speed alone.
Block Design combines visual decomposition, orientation, and manual construction
Completing a Block Design item requires several processes:
- seeing the overall shape, colors, and boundaries in the model;
- breaking the model down into parts that correspond to individual blocks;
- selecting the necessary block face and orientation;
- placing the parts while preserving their spatial relationships;
- comparing the construction with the model and correcting it when needed; and
- selecting, rotating, and placing the blocks accurately by hand.
The use of physical blocks is a defining feature. Visual analysis, spatial construction, and manual manipulation do not receive separate official scores; their combined effect appears in the Block Design score.
What higher and lower Block Design scores can show
In the Japanese WAIS-IV, a higher score indicates that, compared with people of the same age, the person was strong at breaking a complex model down into parts, matching colors, boundaries, and orientations to the blocks, and reconstructing it accurately and efficiently.
A lower score indicates that more placement errors occurred, more time was needed to reach a correct construction, or both. The interpretation can consider how the person divided the model, linked parts to the whole, aligned orientations, retained spatial relationships, checked and corrected the design, manipulated the blocks, and worked within the time conditions.
If Block Design is clearly lower than Visual Puzzles, physical construction, manual manipulation, or the timed bonus conditions may have created more demand than combining shapes mentally. If Block Design and Visual Puzzles are both clearly lower than Matrix Reasoning, decomposing and assembling shapes may have been more demanding than discovering rules in figures. How Block Design differs from Visual Puzzles and Matrix Reasoning
All three are core PRI subtests in the Japanese WAIS-IV, but they require different actions.

The main difference between Block Design and Visual Puzzles is whether the parts are physically assembled or combined entirely in the mind. Matrix Reasoning does not reproduce a completed model; it requires a rule to be discovered from an arrangement of figures.
