Japanese WAIS-IV Digit Span has Forward, Backward, and Sequencing conditions
Digit Span requires a person to remember spoken numbers and reproduce them orally in a specified order. In the Japanese WAIS-IV, it is a core subtest of the Working Memory Index, or WMI, together with Arithmetic.
The Japanese WAIS-IV Digit Span subtest contains three conditions:

The central demand is to keep spoken numbers available long enough to use them. Each sequence is presented once, so the person must take in the numbers accurately, retain them, and respond according to the current rule. In terms of short-term memory and working memory, Forward places greater emphasis on retention, while Backward and Sequencing add more explicit manipulation of the retained information.
Forward preserves both the numbers and their presentation order. Backward requires the retained sequence to be traced from the end. Sequencing leaves the original order behind and rearranges the numbers from smallest to largest. Backward and Sequencing therefore add different forms of order manipulation to the common retention demand.
How to read score differences among the three conditions
Differences among Forward, Backward, and Sequencing can show more specifically where demand increased.
- Forward is higher than Backward and Sequencing — immediate retention in the heard order was stronger than performance when the order had to be changed.
- Backward is lower — reversing and tracing the sequence from the end created greater demand.
- Sequencing is lower — retaining the numbers while judging their size and rearranging them created greater demand.
- The three scores are similar — no one order condition stands out as a clear relative strength or weakness within Digit Span.
For the Japanese WAIS-IV, interpret these comparisons using age-based process scores rather than raw scores or the longest sequence completed. The 2024 US WAIS-5 separates the former Digit Span conditions
In the 2024 US WAIS-5, Forward, Backward, and Sequencing are treated as separate subtests rather than being reported as one broad Digit Span subtest.

Digit Span overlaps with everyday demands on auditory working memory
Similar demands arise when spoken information must be retained briefly and used in a required order, such as:
- following several steps given orally in the correct sequence; or
- retaining a number or code until it has been entered.
If Forward is relatively stronger but Backward or Sequencing is weaker, the additional demand may come from rearranging information rather than from the amount of information alone. Keeping the order visible in a note or on screen reduces that manipulation demand directly.
