ADHD is associated with lower working-memory performance on average
Working memory holds information briefly while it is used in the next part of a task. ADHD groups show moderate differences in both verbal and visuospatial working-memory tasks across 38 adult studies, while the size of the difference in child studies changes with task format and how much information must be manipulated rather than simply retained. Mean WMI nevertheless remains in the standardised average range and only slightly below the other indexes in pooled WAIS-IV and WISC-V profiles (2024 meta-analysis). WMI samples part of the broader function in a brief, structured assessment; these group effects neither require a low WMI in an individual nor establish an ADHD diagnosis.
Separate working-memory loss from other forms of forgetting
Information must first receive attention before it can be held and used. Several processes can therefore produce an experience described as “forgetting”.

Demand rises when retention overlaps with another process
Working-memory demand depends on more than the amount to remember. It increases when information must be retained while the person also decides, switches, or produces an answer.

Interest, fatigue, sleep, surrounding stimulation, and how information is presented can change performance within the same person.
An average WMI does not rule out daily difficulty
WAIS and similar assessments present one clearly defined task at a time, with the examiner managing its beginning and end. Daily life requires choosing priorities, recovering after interruptions, and remembering future intentions without that structure. Standardised performance tasks and everyday-behaviour ratings therefore do not always produce the same picture: they describe structured performance and action under complex daily conditions.
Reduce how much information must stay active

Written instructions, reduced distraction, and shorter periods of focus with breaks are among the environmental modifications in the NICE ADHD guideline. Judge the change by whether omissions decrease and resumption becomes easier.
Working-memory training can improve tasks close to the exercises in the short term, but randomised-trial evidence shows no significant effect on overall ADHD symptoms or hyperactivity/impulsivity; the inattention effect is small, short-term, and limited to the intervention setting (2023 meta-analysis). Broad transfer to work, learning, or future-task management remains uncertain.
