Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions before taking the test or purchasing the detailed report.

Test

What does BrainTypeIQ measure?

BrainTypeIQ measures 5 cognitive domains through 9 tasks.

  • Verbal comprehension (Gc) - understanding and using words and knowledge
  • Fluid reasoning (Gf) - finding rules in new problems
  • Visuospatial processing (Gv) - working with shapes and spatial information
  • Working memory (Gwm) - holding and manipulating information for a short time
  • Processing speed (Gs) - processing simple information quickly and accurately

The test is not limited to overall IQ: it also helps make differences across your cognitive profile easier to read.

Design of the 9 tasks →
How long does it take?

The full test takes about 30 minutes.

Each task takes only a few minutes. You do not need to finish everything in one sitting: you can move forward task by task.

Is the test free?

All 9 tasks, your overall IQ, and your brain type report are free.

Scores for the 5 cognitive domains, scores for the 9 tasks, GAI/CPI, and other detailed indicators are available in the detailed report.

Can I take the test on a smartphone?

Yes, taking the test on a smartphone is recommended.

The test also works on desktop, but some tasks where speed matters can be more affected by how you operate the device. For a more stable result, a smartphone is usually better.

Can I stop partway through?

You do not need to finish the whole test in one sitting.

You can move forward task by task and resume most tasks later.

Some very short timed tasks may be treated as completed if they are interrupted after starting.

When can I take the test again?

You can take it again at any time.

If you still remember questions you recently saw, the learning effect may raise the score above your usual level.

For a more stable result, it is better to wait several weeks before retaking it.

Can I use it for medical diagnosis?

BrainTypeIQ cannot be used for medical diagnosis.

For situations that require clinical judgment, such as ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, developmental conditions, or giftedness, consult a qualified professional.

The results may help you organize cognitive strengths and areas to pay attention to.

Results and reliability

What does the IQ score mean?

IQ indicates a relative position among people who took the same test format.

The average is around 100, and many scores fall between 85 and 115.

It is not a simple ranking of personal worth, but a number that can help you understand cognitive tendencies.

Understand FSIQ →
What are the 5 cognitive domains?

BrainTypeIQ observes the following 5 cognitive domains.

  • Verbal comprehension (Gc) - understanding and using words and knowledge
  • Fluid reasoning (Gf) - solving new problems logically
  • Visuospatial processing (Gv) - perceiving and manipulating shapes and spaces
  • Working memory (Gwm) - temporarily holding and processing information
  • Processing speed (Gs) - speed and accuracy on simple tasks

The combination of strengths and more effortful areas varies from person to person. BrainTypeIQ reads that pattern as a cognitive profile.

The CHC model and the 5 domains →
What are GAI and CPI?

GAI and CPI are two indicators that help read IQ from two angles.

  • GAI (General Ability Index) - areas closer to comprehension, reasoning, and visuospatial processing
  • CPI (Cognitive Processing Index) - efficiency related to working memory and processing speed

For example, someone may be comfortable with deep thinking tasks but less comfortable with fast tasks. The difference between GAI and CPI can make that profile easier to read.

GAI and CPI →
What theory is the test based on?

BrainTypeIQ is based on the CHC model (Cattell-Horn-Carroll).

This framework is widely used in contemporary intelligence research. Tests such as WAIS and WJ are also related to this type of theoretical approach.

BrainTypeIQ uses this framework to observe 5 cognitive domains through 9 tasks.

Understand the CHC model →
How are scores calculated?

Scores are calculated from over 1,000 collected responses, after excluding invalid or duplicate responses, using task-level statistical analysis that takes age into account.

They are designed to show the result as a relative position among people of a similar age.

Score calculation method →
How should I read reliability in the English version?

The English version provides results as reference information for personal understanding.

Scores are calculated from over 1,000 collected responses, after excluding invalid or duplicate responses, using statistical analysis that takes age into account.

They should not be read as standardized results for all English-speaking countries or all English-language backgrounds.

See the measurement design →
What is the brain type report?

The brain type report combines the GAI/CPI balance and the words/image tendency to make cognitive style easier to read.

It should not be read as a fixed label, but as support for personal understanding.

Understand brain types →
How is this different from a clinical test such as WAIS?

WAIS is a clinical test administered face to face by a professional and may be used in medical contexts.

BrainTypeIQ is an online cognitive test intended for personal understanding. It observes several cognitive domains based on the CHC model, but it does not replace WAIS or a medical assessment.

Difference from WAIS →
What happens if I use search or help from someone else?

The results become difficult to interpret correctly.

BrainTypeIQ does not measure whether you already know the correct answer, but how and how quickly you process problems. Take the test without search, notes, or outside help.

Response patterns and reaction times are recorded, and statistically unusual data may reduce score reliability.

Payment and data

What is free?

All 9 tasks, the overall IQ, and the brain type report are free.

Scores for the 5 cognitive domains, task scores, GAI/CPI, and other detailed indicators are available in the detailed report.

How much does the detailed report cost?

The detailed report costs the amount shown on this page and on the purchase screen.

One payment lets you view domain scores, task scores, GAI/CPI, and other detailed indicators.

It is not a subscription. No recurring payment is started.

What data is stored?

BrainTypeIQ stores information such as response accuracy, response times, session information, and login email address.

This information is used to calculate scores, restore sessions, and verify purchase history.

It is also aggregated for statistical analysis, item-quality improvement, and score-calculation stability.

Payment information is processed by Stripe. Braintype does not store card numbers on its servers.
