You do not need to spend several thousand dollars simply to take the WAIS. Measuring intelligence and broadly assessing learning or psychological difficulties are different services. Starting from the USD 600 examples and allowing for a detailed interview or documentation gives a practical budget of about USD 1,000.

The University of Alabama charges adults USD 250–650
The University of Alabama Psychology Clinic charges a flat USD 250–650 for adult assessment and includes intellectual ability among the areas it assesses. The clinic selects the test according to the reason for referral, so this is the price of the university assessment route rather than a standalone WAIS service.
Intelligence assessment alone can therefore be available for hundreds of dollars, while adding learning or diagnostic assessment can raise the fee into the thousands. A comprehensive evaluation costing several thousand dollars should therefore not be treated as the price of WAIS itself.
