WAIS in South Africa

WAIS-IV South African Version uses published South African norms for ages 16 years 0 months through 59 years 11 months. People aged 60 or above should ask how the assessor will qualify the interpretation.

Start with WAIS-IV SA and the relevant HPCSA route

The current Mindmuzik assessment brochure lists the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition South African Version, or WAIS-IV SA.

It is an individually administered assessment. The ten core subtests take about 60–90 minutes and produce FSIQ together with the Verbal Comprehension, Perceptual Reasoning, Working Memory, and Processing Speed indexes. Intake, breaks, additional tests, feedback, and report preparation can extend the full assessment process.

The published South African norm range is 16 years 0 months through 59 years 11 months. Ages 60–80 are labelled as a research phase.

For someone aged 60 or above, ask how the assessor will qualify interpretation outside the published South African norm range, whether other measures are needed, and whether the intended recipient accepts the report.

The brochure lists WAIS-IV UK separately, so its norm basis should not be substituted for WAIS-IV SA. If a provider proposes WAIS-5, ask for the full edition name and norm basis. International availability does not establish that a South African version is being used.

Verify HPCSA registration and WAIS-IV SA competence

The Health Professions Council of South Africa manages registration under the Health Professions Act.

Use the HPCSA psychology page and test-classification information to verify the provider's current registration and relevant professional category. Confirm demonstrated competence with WAIS-IV SA and whether the published South African norms cover your age. If remote delivery is proposed, ask how its conditions differ from standard individual administration and how that will affect interpretation.

For general booking, reporting, timing, and quote comparison, use how to take the WAIS and the WAIS cost guide. If membership is the only goal, use the Mensa South Africa guide before arranging WAIS.
