Naming Speed Quantity measures rapid quantity recognition and naming
Naming Speed Quantity is a new WAIS-5 subtest that requires quantities to be recognized and named rapidly. It examines numerical-processing fluency: how efficiently quantity information can be identified and converted into the corresponding spoken name.
The response is spoken rather than written, so the task reduces the motor demands present in processing-speed subtests that require symbols to be copied or targets to be marked. Its focus is rapid quantity recognition and naming, not written output.
Naming Speed Quantity is a secondary PSI subtest in the US and A&NZ editions
Naming Speed Quantity is a secondary Processing Speed Index, or PSI, subtest in the 2024 US WAIS-5 and the 2025 Australian and New Zealand Standardised Edition.
In both the US and A&NZ WAIS-5, Cancellation was removed and Naming Speed Quantity was introduced as a motor-free processing-speed measure. The WAIS-5 UK also includes Naming Speed Quantity and describes its function as rapid quantity recognition and naming.
Other markets may still use WAIS-IV or follow a different WAIS-5 release path. WAIS-5 availability by market shows which edition is current in each English-speaking market.
Numerical-processing fluency is not the same as arithmetic ability
Naming Speed Quantity draws on a focused sequence of processes:
- recognizing a quantity accurately;
- accessing its spoken numerical label;
- producing that label quickly; and
- sustaining accurate recognition and naming across repeated responses.
These demands involve numerical information, but the task is not a test of solving arithmetic problems or deriving quantitative relationships. It also does not represent all of processing speed, or Gs. Visual search, symbol matching, decision-making, and written production are sampled by other processing-speed tasks.

Symbol Search and Cancellation emphasize visual search, while Coding adds continuous fine motor output and number–symbol association. Naming Speed Quantity provides a different processing-speed condition by centering rapid numerical recognition and spoken naming.
What higher and lower Naming Speed Quantity performance can show
Under standardized WAIS-5 conditions, higher performance shows that the person recognized quantity information and accessed the corresponding spoken labels efficiently. Lower performance means that rapid recognition, access to the numerical label, or repeated spoken naming was more demanding in this task.
