Why a local edition matters
A WAIS edition is not made local only by translating words. It involves materials, instructions, age norms, scoring rules, interpretation guidance, and professional training.
This matters for:
- verbal tasks and cultural wording;
- age-normed score conversion;
- report interpretation;
- whether a receiving institution accepts the result;
- whether the professional can justify the edition and norms used.
If a provider uses WAIS-5 outside a market where the local edition is clearly established, ask which version and norms are being used and why they fit the assessment question.
What to do if you need an assessment now
If you need a formal assessment now, do not make the decision only around waiting for WAIS-5. The more important question is whether the provider uses an appropriate edition and can produce a report that fits your purpose.
Practical examples:
- In the US, WAIS-5 can be the expected current-edition reference, while older WAIS-IV reports may still exist.
- In Australia, WAIS-5 A&NZ may be available, but a provider may still mention WAIS-IV A&NZ during transition.
- In the UK, ask whether the provider is still using WAIS-IV UK or has adopted WAIS-5 UK once available.
- In Canada, ask whether the result is based on WAIS-IV-CDN, WAIS-5 US Version, or a future Canadian edition.
- In Singapore, ask which edition, norms, and report format the provider uses.

What must be rechecked when a new local edition appears
When a local WAIS-5 edition is confirmed in a market, at least four things need to be checked again.
- official index and subtest names;
- age ranges and normative population;
- how FSIQ and indexes are calculated;
- how reports compare with WAIS-IV in that market.
Until then, avoid statements such as "WAIS-5 has replaced WAIS-IV everywhere" or "everyone should wait for WAIS-5."
