IQ tests advertised as official, Mensa, or certified are extremely likely to be predatory subscription sites
IQ tests promoted through paid ads are extremely likely to be predatory subscription sites. The same is true of third-party tests that emphasise words such as “official,” “Mensa,” or “IQ certificate.”
Do not enter your card details on these sites. Answering the questions may be free, but paying a small amount to see a score or certificate commonly starts an automatically renewing subscription, even when the buyer understood the payment to be a one-off result fee.
Mensa International makes the distinction clear. Its own Mensa IQ Challenge is for practice and entertainment and cannot qualify anyone for membership. Admission uses an appropriately supervised approved test or prior evidence accepted by the relevant national Mensa. A third-party “official Mensa test” or paid certificate is not that route.
If Mensa membership is your goal, use the admission route for your country rather than a test that merely uses the Mensa name.
Weak 3×3 matrix quizzes deliberately show flattering IQ scores
Predatory IQ sites commonly present a few dozen low-quality 3×3 matrix questions and then deliberately display a high IQ score to make the result easier to sell. A message such as “IQ 140” or “top 1%” encourages the reader to pay for a detailed report or certificate.
A matrix task can measure part of nonverbal fluid reasoning: finding a rule from relationships among figures. It does not directly measure language ability, working memory, processing speed, and the other abilities needed for a broad estimate of overall IQ. A narrow, weak quiz therefore has no basis for presenting a detailed cognitive profile or precise overall IQ.
A certificate does not repair that problem. It simply places the same flattering number, produced by the same site, onto a document sold by that site. It is not evidence of Mensa eligibility, formal assessment, or measurement quality.
A small result fee turns into a much larger subscription
The small payment requested to unlock a result often starts a subscription. The renewal is disclosed in smaller checkout text, and the card is then charged again weekly, monthly, or every four weeks.
As of 4 September 2026, myIQ offers a USD 1 seven-day entry period that renews at USD 29.99 every 28 days. IQ Test Foundation offers USD 0.99 for the first seven days, followed by USD 14.99 weekly or USD 39.99 monthly. Prices can change, but the structure is the point: a payment that looks like a cheap one-off result becomes a much larger recurring charge.
If you have already been charged, cancel through the provider's account or support channel. Save the checkout page, terms, confirmation, cancellation request, and card statement. If the charge is not resolved, contact your card issuer or payment provider promptly and then the consumer-protection body in your country.
Reliable tests disclose what they measure, who they compare you with, and the price before you begin
A reliable online IQ test lets you answer three questions before you start:
- What does the test measure, and which tasks measure it?
- Who is your score compared with?
- What will the result cost, including any automatic renewal?
